Career Overview
SWAT are elite tactical units in police departments. It is trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular patrol officers, including serving high-risk arrest warrants, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, and engaging heavily-armed criminals. SWAT teams are often equipped with specialized firearms including assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, carbines, riot control agents, stun grenades, and high-powered rifles for snipers.
Education and Training
Applicants with 1 to 2 years of college coursework or a college degree in criminal justice will have the best opportunities for career advancement.
Job Outlook
Job opportunities will be excellent for qualified individuals. Average employment growth is expected.
Earnings
The median annual earnings for SWAT members were $47,460. The middle 50 percent earned between $35,600 and $59,880.
