State troopers arrest criminals Statewide and patrol highways to enforce motor vehicle laws and regulations. State troopers often issue traffic citations to motorists. At the scene of accidents, they may direct traffic, give first aid, and call for emergency equipment. They also write reports used to determine the cause of the accident. State troopers are frequently called upon to render assistance to other law enforcement agencies, especially those in rural areas or small towns.

 

Education and Training

Applicants with 1 to 2 years of college coursework or a college degree in criminal justice will have the best opportunities for career advancement.

 

Job Outlook

Job opportunities will be excellent for qualified individuals. Average employment growth is expected.

 

Earnings

The median annual earnings for state troopers were $47,460. The middle 50 percent earned between $35,600 and $59,880. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,310, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $72,450.
